Grand Knight’s message — April 2015

Brother Knights, Ladies, and families,

Have you ever had the ending of a story told to you before you had had a chance to read the book or watch the film?  When it happens to you, you’re apt to get mad about it and spout sarcastically, “Thanks a lot for spoiling the ending for me!”

Yet there is one story whose ending we already know and yet, every year, we get to live it out fully — this is our commemoration of the Birth, Death, and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Each of these three events, taken on its own, already speaks to the infinite love that God has for us, but at the same time, you cannot have the one part without the other two as well.  All were necessary; all were part of God’s plan for our salvation.

Consider now the Disciples: They encountered Jesus face to face, left everything and followed Him, and were told by Him (on more than one occasion) that the Son of Man must be sacrificed and raised up again.  I think the part about being “raised up again” must have gone in one ear and out the other, as they must have had no idea what this could possibly mean.  By the Last Supper, they are only starting to come to terms with Jesus telling them that this was their last evening together.  Then comes Jesus’s arrest leading to the unstoppable chain of events that sees the Disciples scattered in fear while their best friend is crucified and dies.

On Easter morning, word reaches the Disciples that the tomb is empty.  Imagine the buzz that fills the atmosphere.  What could this possibly mean?  And in the evening, they were gathered in the Upper Room, with the doors locked out of fear — and what happens?  The Resurrected Jesus comes in and greets them warmly and they rejoice!

The Disciples were first-hand witnesses to all these events in real time.  They certainly did not know the ending of the story!  It was precisely because they were unspoiled that they could become the witnesses who could recount these events for all future generations.  Every year, we relive their journey, and now, we are the ones who are charged with carrying on their mission to bring the Good News to all people.

May the Lord God bless us with all the good graces we need to carry out His plan!
