This year we celebrated Ash Wednesday on February 25th. March1st is not only the first Sunday of March but the First Sunday of Lent. Lent is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter. The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert where, according to the Bible, he endured temptation by Satan. Through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self denial during Holy Week we prepare ourselves to celebrate the Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. Although I mistakenly wrote this last month, we as Christians need to realize that it is an extremely important time for us, and I feel that it deserves to be mentioned again.
Congratulations are in order for Brothers Real Demers and Arnold Lorenz and all their volunteers. Once again the Pasta Night Dinner was a great success. This annual event has proven to be a great community builder for our Church. Thank you.
Welcome to three new Brothers to our Council, Bro. Brian Murphy, Bro. David Murphy and Bro. Kyle Murphy who received the honours of the First Degree on February the 7th. I ask you fellow Brother Knights to introduce yourself to these new members and make them feel at home.
On that note, our Council will be holding a membership drive on March 7th & 8th before and after all the masses. As it stands now, the Council as well as the State, has not met its membership goals for this Columbian year. Brother Paolo Festa-Bianchet, our acting Membership Director, will be requiring assistance in inviting potential Catholic gentlemen to join our great order. If you are available to help out at one of the masses, please contact Bro. Paolo at Paolo.Festa-Bianchet@doccio.com or at 780-433-7282. If you know of a potential candidate, there will be an information hour at the church on March 9th from 7:00pm -9:00pm.
On Wednesday March 25th our Council will be holding a First Degree in the Parish Hall from 7:00pm – 9:30pm. This Degree is being held for the candidates from our Council. What better way to show our support than by having a strong presence of Brother Knights in attendance - please consider attending.
Our Council will be hosting the 2009 State Curling Bonspiel on March 13, 14 & 15th at the Saville Sports Centre. As host Council we need to have representation on and off the ice. If you are interested in playing or volunteering, contact Brother Rob Liber at 780-450-0585 or skrliber@shaw.ca.
Brother John McGhee has sparked an interest in a K of C Seniors complex for our city. Currently there are 4 brother knights from our Council and 3 brothers from St. Peter’s Council who will be meeting to discuss the feasibility of this project. If you are interested in participating in this potential project, please contact me.
On September 11th, 2009, St. Thomas More Parish will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. Father Sylvain has asked the Knights to help out in the celebrations. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact one of the Executive.
The Council is actively seeking Brothers who are willing to look after or participate in a Council Program or a Brother(s) who may be willing to assume one of the Executive positions. If you are interested contact one of the Executive. Remember “the more hands the smaller the task.”
